Homer was an ancient Greek epic poet. He is considered to be the author of the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. Information is very little about his real existence. That is why there are two theories about his individuality – while the ancient Greeks believed in his historical existence, some modern researchers are skeptical and consider him to be a fictitious personage. Instead of believing in the concrete existence of the poet, some specialists consider the poems to be the result of collective work, in the long tradition of orally composed poetry. Some recognize the role of one or more poets in smoothing the poems, while others just consider the final variant to be the result of tradition and collective work.
The date of Homer is also controversial. According to Herodotus, Homer lived 400 years before his own time, at about 850 BC; but other ancient sources refer to dates closer to the Trojan War. In modern scholarship, "the date of Homer equals the date of the poems, the end of the 9th century BC or from the 8th. Other researchers have been arguing for a 7th-century date.
